If you’re thinking of installing a new boiler in your home, please get in touch.

An engineer will come to visit your home and undertake a survey determining the best boiler for your home and providing a free no-obligation quote.

Do You Have An Old Boiler?

As boilers age, they lose their efficiency, costing more and more to run.

As boilers become less efficient fuel wastage increases, up to 45% in some cases. A cost of over £300 to most households.

New condensing boilers run at between 90 and 99% efficiency representing a big saving for households with old boilers.

A typical 3 bedroom semi-detached home can save up to £340 a year by installing a new boiler

What’s Your Boiler & Central Heating System Requirements?

There are many different types of boiler available on the market

When installing a new boiler, take into account your existing central heating system or the new central heating system you’re having installed.

Choose the wrong boiler type or size then you’re stuck with a boiler that won’t serve you well.

For example, too small, and it won’t meet your family’s needs. You’ll be frustrated with the lack of hot water.

Too large and you waste energy and of course money

Always have a survey done by an experienced gas engineer who’ll take every variable (size of your property, number of radiators, existing system, etc.) into account.

A survey allows an engineer to determine the best type, size, make and fuel type of boiler for your home.

So you get the perfect boiler that’ll give you many years of satisfying service.

Condensing Boilers

All Boilers fitted by TM Hughes & Son are condensing boilers

Here’s why

When combustible materials are burnt for fuel waste occurs. The excess is expelled through the flue (to stop you from being poisoned by carbon dioxide).

Old non-condensing boilers let the excess fuel escape, the norm until the condensing boiler was invented.

The condensing boiler extracts heat from expelled gases which is then used to heat water, making condensing boilers way more efficient than old designs of boiler.

As time’s passed heating technologies improved and the condensers have got better and more efficient.

Since 2005 all new boilers fitted in UK homes must be condensing boilers as they are much more environmentally friendly than old-style boilers. We only install condensing Boilers.

While condensing boilers are more expensive when compared to the old-style boiler, the money saved in heating bills makes up for the extra purchase cost.

Are Condensing Boilers Prone To Breakdown In Freezing Weather?

Condensing boilers utilise a condensate pipe which run’s outside.

In freezing weather the can freeze which will stop the boiler working, this isn’t a cause for concern.

  • Insulate the condensate pipe, and it won’t freeze in the first place
  • Defrosting frozen pipes is pretty simple anyway

The Three Types Of Boiler We Install

System Boilers

Water heated by system boilers is circulated around your radiators to heat your home and stored in a hot water cylinder for use with your hot water taps and shower.

Unlike regular boilers the system boiler doesn’t require tanks, saving on loft space.

System boilers do however require an expansion tank, a small vessel which sits above the hot water storage cylinder

System boilers are generally easy to install even with existing central heating systems.

The pressurised cylinder means you’ve always got hot water when you need it and it will always be as satisfactory pressure.

The size of your storage cylinder will depend on your hot water use.

Cylinders on both system and regular boilers can be fitted with immersion heaters. If the boiler ever fails, switch the immersion on for hot water.

Regular Boilers

Regular boilers are the oldest design of them all, sometimes referred to as conventional or traditional boilers.

Many older homes have a regular system installed. Over the past couple of decades, regular boiler installations have become less common with the rise of the modern system and combi boilers.

Regular boiler utilises various working parts they need two tanks in the loft, a storage tank and a feed expansion tank to supply the boiler and a vented water cylinder to store the hot water.

Hot water’s supplied by gravity a central heating pump is used to keep the water circulating in the radiators.

Regular Boilers Ideal For Large Homes

Regular boilers are useful for larger homes, as there’s a constant supply of hot water in the cylinder multiple taps and showers can be used at the same time with constant pressure and hot water for everybody.

Regular systems require more parts and take longer to fit than other systems making them more expensive.

The tanks and cylinder take up space, not an issue if you live in a large home. If you have an existing regular system, it’s cost-effective to replace the boiler and leave the system as it is.

For those who live in smaller homes with an old regular system, you can install a combi boiler which will remove the cylinder and water tanks, creating extra space.

Combi Boilers

Combination boilers are compact with great energy efficiency. They take up little room and don’t require the use of a cylinder or water tanks.

Combi’s heat water instantly on demand for your taps and central heating system.

Combi boilers are now the most popular type of boiler fitted in the UK.

Turn on your hot water tap. The combi boiler detects the flow of water activating a heating element that heats the water as it flows through.

Combi Boilers Are Usually The Best Choice For Small Homes

  • No storage cylinder means you only heat the water you use
  • Fewer parts are needed for Combi boilers, so they’re usually the fastest and cheapest type of boiler installation
  • As there are fewer parts required space is saved

The pressure, however, will only be as good as your mains pressure if you have a good mains pressure you’ll be ok if not you might want to consider another style of the boiler.

Another thing to consider is that you can only run one hot tap bath or shower at any one time, ok if you have one bathroom.

There’s no backup hot water supply with a combi boiler (storage cylinder) If your boiler breaks down you’ll be without hot water until repaired.

Boiler Fuel Types

Gas

Most homes in are connected to the gas grid. Therefore, most boilers we install are gas.

All gas boilers are condensing boilers, regular, combi and system.

Gas is widely used in the UK as fuel as it’s around three times cheaper than electricity.

Electricity

Electric boilers are an option for homes off the gas grid. Utilising a heating element that heats  water on demand (like a gas combi boiler does)

Electric boilers are efficient as there’s near-zero wastage.

Easy to install and maintain and there’s no risk of carbon monoxide poisoning either.

Electric boilers are around 3-4 times more expensive to run than gas boilers.

Oil

Popular with the countryside homes oil is a cheaper alternative to electricity.

Boilers work much the same as gas boilers do, a combustible fuel appliance.

A storage tank’s needed to store the oil which has to be topped up when it gets to the bottom, run out of oil, you’ll have no heat. Unlike gas or electricity, the oil must be manually delivered.

We also fit LPG Boilers

Makes Of Boiler

There are many makes of boiler available in the UK at various price ranges. The make of boiler you choose for your home may depend on your budget as some brands are more expensive than others. Quality varies between brands as well.
