Various problems can arise with Radiators and Valves; when they are not working properly, they can leave your home cold and waste energy. Some issues you may be able to solve yourself. Others are more involved and will require professional attention. Our Heating Engineers are fully qualified in solving radiator and valve problems. Common Radiator Problems

Radiator Is Cold At Top

There is probably air in the system. This can usually be solved with bleeding or balancing.

Radiator Is Cold At The Bottom, Middle Or Both

There’s probably a build-up of sludge at the bottom of the radiator, the radiator can be removed and cleaned, or the whole system can have a standard chemical flush or a Powerflush.

Radiators Work Downstairs But Are Cold Upstairs

This could be a problem with the feed and expansion cistern and will need checking by a qualified Heating Engineer.

Radiators Work Upstairs But Are Cold Downstairs

This is likely an issue with the pump; the pump could need cleaning or replacing.

One Radiator Is Cold The Rest Are Warm

The valves could be closed, in which case they will need opening. If a valve is stuck (open but not letting water through), it will need unsticking. If the valves are open and the radiator is still not getting hot, the valve could be blocked with sludge; the system will need flushing.

Radiator Valve Fitting & Replacement

There are two types of Radiator Valves Manual and Thermostatic.

Manual Valves are found on old radiators; the valve is turned to control the room temperature, the radiator will run at the same temperature regardless of room temperature. This usually means the room is too hot or cold and isn’t energy efficient.

Thermostatic Valves have a temperature sensor that’s set to keep the room temperature at a constant level. They are more accurate and easier to set than manual valves, easy to use and energy-efficient.

We regularly replace Manual Valves with Thermostatic Valves, a simple but effective upgrade to any existing central Heating system with the older style manual valves.
